Persona features the world-premiere of Julia Fullerton-Batten’s new series Mothers & Daughters, her most recent exploration of the unique and difficult time of adolescence. The series, inspired by her and her sisters’ relationship with their mother, portrays the complex and sometimes challenging relationship between mothers and their daughters. She continues to work with street-cast, non-model subjects, whose subtle awkwardness and discomfort in front of the camera emphasize the reality of the scenes. Her use of eerie artificial light gives the final photographs a theatrical, other-worldly atmosphere. Through depictions of infant, adolescent, middle-aged, and elderly subjects in this series, Fullerton-Batten showcases the changing nature of mother-daughter relationships throughout their lifespan.

The First Stateside Retrospective of Photographs by Brian Duffy
Clic Gallery
255 Centre Street, NY, NY

Opening Reception: Thursday, May 3, 6-8pm

It is with greatest excitement that Clic Gallery presents Duffy, the first stateside retrospective from legendary fashion/commercial photographer Brian Duffy opening on May 3rd.

The opening reception will take place from 6-8 pm the same day.

The exhibition will run from May 3 – June 3, 2012.

By the end of the 1950s, the static and chaste status quo that had come to dominate fashion photography was usurped by a new, freewheeling mode of documentary fashion photography. Fashion bibles like Vogue and Elle, responding to the times, began zeroing in on what was hip, young and “prêt-à-porter” — replacing the untouchable debutante of the 1950s with the energetic, playful every-girl who would come to exemplify the 1960s. Kinetic, sexy, and cheekily humorous, this new photographic sensibility helped reinvent London as Swinging London and give a visual identity to mod culture. At the forefront of this new wave were three British enfant terribles named David Bailey, Terry Donovan, and Brian Duffy — all irreverent, working class lads, contemptuous of the norm, who sought to rest the scepter of fashion photography from the grips of so-called ‘gentleman’ photographers such as Norman Parkinson and Cecil Beaton. The three, dubbed “The Black Trinity” by Parkinson, ushered in a new era where youthful vibrancy trumped old-guard patricianism and fashion photos coursed alive with devil-may-care attitude and guerilla-style candidness. The three inspired a new cult of the cool photographer which culminated in Michelangelo Antonioni’s worldwide smash hit Blow-Up about a jaded young fashion photographer working in mod London — a film still considered an artistic high water mark of the Swinging 60s.

Archizines is an exhibition and a research project to celebrate and promote the resurgence of independent and alternative publishing practices. Making its American debut at Storefront with a bespoke design by \ / | < | \ | (Giancarlo Valle, Isaiah King, Ryan Neiheiser) the exhibition draws inspiration from the quintessential New York model of publication display - the newstand - and turns it on its side. Instead of a vertical, 2-dimensional billboard, the show will offer a horizontal, 3-dimensional field of objects: 80 architecture publications displayed on delicate metal rods, which sprout from the floor. The exhibition will evacuate all other content from the space, creating an information vacuum that focuses the visitor's attention on the objects themselves: 80 architecture magazines, fanzines and journals from over 20 countries that provide new platforms for commentary, criticism and research into the spaces we inhabit and the practice of architecture today.

This is the first book of essays by a long-time renowned chronicler of underground culture. The way this book mashes up lo-bro and hi-bro is readable, funny and thought-provoking, and also downright provoking. Johan Kugelberg’s essays on punk, style and pop culture have entertained readers of international publications including Dazed and Confused, Another Man, Ugly Things, Perfect Sound Forever, Spin, Hip Hop Connection, Raygun and Fact over the last couple of decades.

Brad Pitt’s Dog explores topics ranging from the psychogeography of record fairs, eulogies for Michael Jackson and Malcolm McLaren, a discussion of satire on Youtube, and essays on artists Dash Snow, Daido Moriyama, Carl Johan De Geer and Ragnar Persson, amongst other enthusiastic writings on photography, art, punk, and popular culture.

Johan Kugelberg runs the exhibit space Boo-Hooray in New York’s Chinatown. Recent exhibitions include In All Our Decadence People Die – Crass-era Fanzines, Artists’ Book Not Artists’ Book, Dreamweapon – The Art and Life of Angus MacLise, Ed Sanders – Fuck You / A Magazine of the Arts 1962-1965.
